Argentina accuses Chile of encroaching into its territorial waters and trying to seize part of the continental shelf. Officials described the move as unacceptable.
These include areas along continental shelf formations where ice is attached to the shore, the National Institute of Polar Research said in a statement.
While " inner-coast" transients stalk shallow waters near the shore, " outer-coast" transients hunt in the deep open waters along canyons at the edge of the continental shelf.
The country says because the North Pole is connected to the continental shelf of Greenland, and because Greenland is a Danish autonomous territory, the North Pole is Denmark`s.
From the shore line, out to a distance which may be anywhere from a few miles to a few hundred miles, runs the gentle slope of the continental shelf, geologically part of the continents.
The depth of the open ocean varies considerably but the majority of it falls from the continental shelf down to depths of between 3,000 and 6000 meters, in what are known as abyssal plains.
But these continents, in terms of a strict geological definition actually extend outward some way into the sea, in the form of shallow continental shelves, before suddenly dropping down into the abyssal plains of the deep oceans.
